For even stone cannot the wind and rain withstand, and mighty mountain peaks in time reduce to sand ~Nicholas Evans

In Memory of My Father

box In Memory of My Father,
Chief John J. O'Rourke, FDNY

September 30th 2008, will be the four year anniversary marking my father's passing. I cannot believe four years have passed, It seems like yesterday I was busting his chops about not being able to hear me or asking him how to get somewhere, there wasn't anywhere my father did not know how to get to! To me, my father was a great man, he sacrificed for his family and would do anything for his friends! He helped every one of us, one way or another. There wasn't anything he could not help you with.

He was the rock of our family and going on without him has been hard on all of us. Sometimes I still say to myself "I'll ask Dad he'll know", and with that comes the hard realization he is no longer physically present. I say physically present because, I feel he is always with us, inside all of us, you cannot be that big in life and then just fade away in death, he left his mark on all of us. Whether you were a family member, friend or an acquaintance you felt my father's presence. He was humble and never thought of himself as a great man or better than anyone. He had that ability to be on all levels at once and that is a very rare quality to find in anyone.

Dad did not talk a lot but when he did it was either wise, really funny or you got that look and you knew that look meant business! Of course that look was always deserved, no one got the look without reason and anyone who has been on the receiving end of that look will never forget it, of that I'm sure! I can see it now and it is making me crack a smile. Of course there is so much more I could say and my Dad meant so much more than any of that to all of us who were lucky enough to have known him.

Remember him every day, Be grateful for the time you did have with him and keep him alive in your heart, Some thing's never fade, Some thing's will never be forgotten.

Be still
Close your eyes.
Listen for my footfall in your heart.
I am not gone but merely walk within you.

Daddy, I love and miss you more with each passing day!
